The Crew You Build Is Part of Your Career

There is a particular kind of independence celebrated in the live events industry:

Figure it out.

Handle it.

Don't be a problem.

Be the person who can solve the problem.

And many of us have built careers on becoming exactly that person…the one who knows what to do, remembers what everyone else forgot, and can somehow find a way through when things get complicated.

Yet somewhere along the way, we can forget something integral: You may be responsible for your career, but you were never meant to build it alone.

If you look back at the road that brought you here, there are probably people scattered all along it. The person who recommended you for your first tour. The person who taught you something without making you feel foolish for not knowing it in the first place. The person who remembered your name when an opportunity came along, who checked on you after a brutal gig, or who you could call when you genuinely didn't know what to do next. And if you've been around long enough, it's possible you've become that person for someone else. That isn't networking.That's infrastructure.

The Relationships That Hold Us Together

We hear it all the time: It's not what you know, it's who you know.

Sure, there's some truth to that. Live events is an industry built on reputation, trust, and people remembering your name when an opportunity comes along. But the relationships that truly sustain us for the long haul go deeper than that.

Think about the crews that hum along: the ones that get the gig done smoothly because everyone trusts one another and knows how to work together. And then, after load-in, those same people still want to hang out in the parking lot basking in bus generator fumes to decompress or spend a day off together. That's when you realize it isn't transactional. It's connection.

You didn't just build a professional network. You built trust, shared long days, solved problems together. You became part of one another's stories. You trauma bonded. The crew you build becomes part of the architecture of your career, and part of the life you build along the way.

And sometimes, those relationships are built in the places we don't necessarily think of as part of the job. A workshop. A coffee chat. A person you met in a room full of strangers who, years later, is still someone you call when you need a gut check, a job lead, a laugh, or just somebody who understands why you haven't done laundry in three weeks.

That's part of what makes this industry special. We don't just build shows. We build each other. And sometimes, we build the spaces where that can happen.

Fifteen Years of Building with the fall Workshop

This November, ECCHO Live will celebrate 15 years of the fall Workshop.

Our industry has changed a lot over those years. The technology has changed. The jobs have evolved. The conversations have shifted. Even the name of this workshop has shifted from Touring Career Workshop to “ECCHO Live Workshop” to ensure we are inclusive to the range of folks working hard in live events.

But some things remain remarkably consistent.

For 15 years, people have shown up in the same spirit: to learn something, sure...but also to find each other. To ask questions. To share what they've figured out. To realize they're not the only ones navigating whatever season of work or life they're currently in. And maybe that's the real legacy of what Chris Lisle and Erik Parker set out to do with the ECCHO Live Workshop.

It is not just the sessions we've presented or the information we've shared, but the connections made in the room...and the relationships that continued long after everyone packed up and went home. So we hope you'll join us at Rock Nashville this year as we explore the theme of "Evolve"!
